Search engines are able to index the internet through the use of "spiders". Spiders will crawl the internet by first reviewing the content on known websites. As it reads and indexes the content, the spider will specifically record the links present on the webpages. It then visits the links it's saved and repeats the process. The idea is that, by crawling from site to site, the majority of the internet's content can be traversed.

Some search engines, namely Google, have tools to allow you to manually request a crawl of your website. This speeds up the time it takes for your site to be recognized on their search engine and show up when visitors search for keywords relating to your content.

There is also software available, Search Engine Submission software, that claims to automatically submit your website to various search engines. As a general rule, we don't recommend using any practices that attempt to trick or "game" search engines. A search engine will naturally crawl your site as it traverses the internet. Interfering with this process or artificially inflating your search engine ranking can have detrimental results in the long run. If a search engine identifies that your site is ranking higher due to unnatural means, you may one day find that they've removed your site from their results entirely. For this reason, we do not suggest using Search Engine Submission software or, for that matter, any means to artificially increase your site's search engine ranking.

The key to getting high rankings on search engines is to have unique, meaningful, relevant content on your website. SEO can help, but content is the key. If you want to see your website returned in search results on search engines, it's best to start by using Google Webmaster Tools to submit your site. The rest of the search engines will follow shortly thereafter.
